Collegium 1704 is a leading Prague-based Baroque orchestra founded in 2005 by harpsichordist and conductor Václav Luks as part of the project Bach – Prague – 2005. Since its inception, the ensemble has focused primarily on historically informed performances of Baroque music, while also exploring repertoire from other periods. Collegium 1704 has played a significant role in rediscovering forgotten works, particularly those by Czech composers such as Jan Dismas Zelenka and Josef Mysliveček.
The orchestra performs regularly in Prague at venues including the Rudolfinum and the Vzlet Cultural Centre, and frequently collaborates with internationally renowned soloists specializing in Baroque music.
Why the name 1704? The year 1704 symbolizes the spiritual patron of the ensemble, composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. In that year, the Jesuit allegorical play Via Laureata, featuring Zelenka’s music, was performed at St. Nicholas Church in Prague. As very little is known about Zelenka’s earlier life or the following decade of his career, 1704 represents the moment when one of the greatest geniuses of Czech Baroque music, and one of the most original composers in music history, first emerged onto the musical scene.
