Did you know that...

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist in Sedlec is one of the oldest Gothic architectural achievements in our country. Its story, spanning over 800 years, is full of highs and lows. The original building was constructed in the 12th century as part of a Cistercian monastery. After one of the Sedlec monks discovered silver on the monastery grounds, the order gained wealth, which was used to build a three-nave Gothic church. Its beauty, however, was not favored by fate, as in 1421 the local monastery and church were burned down by the Hussite army. Even the ruined remains of the cathedral caused considerable amazement. Then, in the 17th century, when the brilliant architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel arrived in the region, he breathed new life into the abandoned structure. Under his hands, a seemingly incongruous symbiosis emerged, known as Baroque Gothic, which has no parallel in the world. Thanks in part to this, the cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.

The Sedlec Cathedral can be described with several superlatives. It is the oldest cathedral-type sacred building in Central Europe. Among Czech cathedrals, it is the longest. Its construction was completed in the shortest time compared to similar buildings, while other churches took entire centuries to build. Last but not least, this place of worship can easily be regarded as the most beautiful fusion of Gothic and Baroque, the work of the architectural genius Santini, as well as a significant historical heritage and a unique landmark of Central Europe.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The combined ticket includes both the cathedral and the ossuary. Time slots have been implemented for the ossuary, so it is necessary to reserve a specific entry time slot, which will be arranged for you when purchasing at one of the Prague sales points. If the ossuary is fully booked at the chosen time, you can still visit the cathedral only. Present your Prague Visitor Pass at the Sedlec information center to receive your ticket.
