The unique premises of the Minorite Monastery – the oldest Franciscan monastery in Central Europe – serve the public not only as a site for guided tours, but also as a cultural, social, and business venue. This spiritual complex, founded shortly after 1232, gained the attention and favor of royal dynasties during the 13th and 14th centuries and underwent several reconstructions over the centuries. Only part of the original, expansive grounds has been preserved to this day. The complex, built around a rectangular courtyard, reflects architectural styles ranging from Gothic to High Baroque. A highlight of the site is the beautiful Apothecary Angelo’s Garden, also known as the Angelic Garden (Hortus Angelicus). Angelo, a respected herbalist from Florence, held a prominent position at the court of Emperor Charles IV. In 1360, he created a sophisticated herb garden and became the court apothecary to both Charles IV and his son Wenceslas.
